The power of Christ compels you!
To celebrate the holidays, the Cadaver Dogs have a conversation about God… or rather, about a couple of horror films that are quite sold on “God is real.” THE EXORCIST (1973) is one of the most acclaimed movies in the genre, but does the plot basically boil down to an embrace of Catholic ideologies, or is there something deeper? As a film in the 70s, we will also bring in the Satanic Panic, as well as first wave feminism and how all these stray concepts interact.
THE CONJURING (2013) doubles down on those religious themes, and even claims to be based on a true story, a claim we will most definitely be dissecting. The word “propaganda” may get thrown around, but do these movies qualify as propaganda? What does that even mean? Find out in this episode, our final one for 2022!

You ever notice how so many horror films seem to revolve around Judeo-Christian ideologies? We have. And we want to talk about that. If the Devil is real, so is God. And indeed, through the process of exorcism, these films teach us to beat the demons… by calling on Christ. So what makes these different from faith films? Or rather, are they different, or are they really just religious propaganda? We have opinions.

This week we cover all things body swapping and Racial appropriation as our protagonists guard themselves against the evil of stealing their life and body! Devin and David go it alone this month first venturing to New Orleans with the hoodoo horror THE SKELETON KEY and following it up with the Oscar winning smash hit GET OUT. Hope they don’t stumble through these racially interested weeds. But don’t worry, Rob phones it in from his throne in the end.

A curse on you and your family! JK JK That’d be pretty terrible wouldn’t it?
This month, the Cadaver Dogs explore two films dealing with ancient curses in which main characters trade their humanity - or lose it - and become a beast of vengeance! Starting way back to the classic Universal horror movie that started Hollywood’s love for werewolves with THE WOLF MAN (1941, dr. George Waggner). David, Devin, and Rob look at how WWII influenced the tragic figure of Larry Talbot and dig into the history of the Romani people. We also gawk at the stars that pack this film: Lon Chaney Jr., Bela Lugosi, AND Claude Raines?? Then, fast forward to the f*ed up 80s with creature feature (or slasher?) PUMPKINHEAD (1988, dir. Stan Winston). No Reagan talk this time, but we do touch on the Rust Belt. Do we find curses more tragic or vilifying? How are they a source of “othering” in horror? And why are werewolves so damn awesome!?

Back to where it all began… Camp Crystal Lake, otherwise known as Camp Blood. This is FRIDAY THE 13TH (1980). Slasher films are often discussed as a genre, but in 80s America they were also a movement, a response to the politics of the day. That’s right, we’re talking Ronald Reagan! Sex is sin, and teens who reject abstinence and fail to “say no to drugs” are the perfect victims for the Voorhees family.
Then, we’re jumping ahead to remove the slasher from this context and see how those themes and tropes change. Ti West’s X (2022) is a newer film, but one we’re already excited to dig our paws into! Releasing this just ahead of the release of X’s prequel PEARL means we can examine the film unaffected by however the next film may change our interpretations.

The Cadaver Dogs delve deep inside THE UNBORN CHILD, aka SOP DEK 2002 (2011) where they discuss the true abortion incident that inspired the Thai horror film (and also murdering ghost babies). Fact or propaganda! Only you can tell. Followed by the classic Frankenstein baby flick ITS ALIVE (1974) where the Dogs reflect on the influence of the recently passed Roe V Wade (1973) and the great Thalidomide scandal that changed the nation.
