Minisode: Cadaver Trivia #2 w/ Autopsy of a Horror Movie
Tuesday Jan 25, 2022
Tuesday Jan 25, 2022
I want to play another game.
It’s been a while since our last Cadaver Trivia, but we’re back! David once again leads the contest as Brucker Nourse from Autopsy of a Horror Movie competes with co-hosts Devin and Rob. We’ve got werewolves. We’ve got slashers. We’ve got Spanish surrealists. But unlike Mr. Ghostface, we won’t kill you if you get an answer wrong (or will we?).

AUDITION / FRANKENHOOKER: The Perfect Woman
Thursday Jan 20, 2022
Thursday Jan 20, 2022
Want a date? But with whom? What are the ideals and standards of perfection that men hold women to in modern society? The Cadaver Dogs are pulling back the curtains on the unrealistic expectations we hold in relationships, and the destructive – sometimes explosive – consequences.
There have been many interpretations of Takashi Miike’s AUDITION (1999) over the years, and oh boy do we have thoughts! On the total opposite of the spectrum lies FRANKENHOOKER (1990), the title and plot of which writer-director Frank Henenlotter improvised during a pitch meeting. But the Dogs will also seek to answer: Are these movies truly sexist, or are they secretly feminist? Or neither?

Announcing next week's films:
AUDITION (1999, dir. Takashi Miike)
FRANKENHOOKER (1990, dir. Frank Henenlotter)
What's your ideal of the perfect woman? How bout one that cuts out your tongue? Or one that isn't even really alive but a reanimated corpse? These are the punishments that befall the protagonists in next week's episode. We'll be talking male gaze, the dangers of a narrow perspective, and how these movies successfully walk a thin line between feminism and misogyny.

SAINT MAUD / HOUR OF THE WOLF: Good Damage
Thursday Jan 06, 2022
Thursday Jan 06, 2022
Praise films and silence the voice(s) speaking inside your head for the very first Cadaver Dogs episode of the New Year! Devin, David and Rob are getting spiritual with last year's SAINT MAUD, the first feature by promising new filmmaker Rose Glass. The film follows a young medical aid who believe she has direct communication with God himself, and it is her duty to share this gift. What's better than voices in one person's head you ask, why it's a union of voices born of a marriage gone awry upon an isolated island. In Ingmar Burgman's HOUR OF THE WOLF, we attempt to understand something about this strange horror story by the film master.
Stick around horror hounds while we discuss religion, the value of pain, and whole host of interpretations in these metaphor lanced insanity flicks.

“They’re he-e-e-e-ere!!” Why is it that every possible line is a lot scarier when uttered by a child? There’s no one on this planet who was not a kid at some point, and most kiddos are perfectly innocent bundles of joy. And yet… Rob and David team up with guest star Brandon Christensen, writer/director of Shudder exclusive SUPERHOST, to countdown their top 3 children of horror!

AMERICAN PSYCHO / BETTER WATCH OUT: X-Mas Psycho Special!
Thursday Dec 16, 2021
Thursday Dec 16, 2021
Jingle Bells! Twilight smells! Brundle-Fly laid an egg! Patrick Bateman killed his date, and Luke Lerner got away!
’Tis the season, and whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, or none of the above, the Cadaver Dogs are here for this final episode of the year to talk about psychopaths. (What’d you expect? Family and togetherness?) Psychopathy is a real illness, but what does it mean when someone lacks empathy? Does this excuse the terrible behavior of the men in these movies? Or are they just expressing their fragile toxic masculinity, no different from any other misogynist?
In Mary Harron’s AMERICAN PSYCHO (2000), a brilliantly crazed Christian Bale guides us through these questions and more. We discuss serial killers, privilege, homophobia, and of course author Bret Easton Ellis, upon whose novel the film is based. But perhaps it’s BETTER WATCH OUT (2016) where we find a more realistic example of budding psychopathy, forcing us to turn to our textbooks to check if it’s even possible to diagnose a literal child. Both men impose their will upon the women in their lives, treating them (and really everyone) as mere objects to be owned. Do they even know it’s Christmas??

Announcing next week's films:
BETTER WATCH OUT (2017, dir. Zack Kahn)
AMERICAN PSYCHO (2000, dir. Mary Harron)
It's the Cadaver Dogs's first Holiday Special! And what better way to celebrate than with blood, gore, and a little psychosis. Next week, we'll talk through the twists and turns in these two thrillers. What's real? What's all in their head? What makes a psycho killer a psycho killer? And why is it always sexual?
